The Forest At Duke (TFAD) is a vibrant non-profit continuing care retirement community (CCRC) with over 400 residents enjoying life at The Forest. Our mission is to provide a caring, responsible community that fosters the independence of residents of retirement age by enhancing their capability to lead purposeful, active, healthy, and secure lives. Our Community Life Program is one of our most critical programs, impacting all of our residents, staff, and visitors. The Community Program Manager supports the Director of Community Life in the overall day-to-day management of the programs, events and activities in our community. This includes all aspects of developing, planning, implementing, facilitation and evaluation of our current programs, events and activities as well as future planning.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field such as exercise sports science, health promotion, physical education or the equivalent education and experience.
  • Must have a minimum of 2 years related work experience with older adults in a residential environment with the ability to assess and understand the unique needs of older adults.
  • 2 years of experience supervising two or more direct reports preferred.
  • 2 years of experience in event planning, recreation and activities management strongly preferred.
  • A current, valid North Carolina state driver’s license, an acceptable Motor Vehicle Driving Record, and must complete required company-provided Safe Driving Training within first month of hire.
  • Excellent computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook, etc.) is needed.
  • Knowledge of photographic and audio/visual equipment preferred.
  • Knowledge of regional history and cultural arts preferred.
  • The ability to understand, speak, read, and write English proficiently is required.

  • Must be able to remain calm under stress, and to problem-solve or report problem identification to supervisor.
Key Functions of the Position:
  • Responsible for managing all aspects of programming, events and activities with a focus on developing, planning, implementing and evaluating to ensure success.
  • Responsible for creating a strategic focus and plan regarding resident programs, events and activities for future program creation, enhancement, and expansion.
  • Creates the vision for Resident and Community Programs, including partnerships with local Durham businesses, organizations, and resource groups.
  • Has direct management responsibility for the Program Coordinator and Program Assistant, including recruitment, training and development, performance management, payroll, and supervision of day-to-day tasks.
  • Responsible for managing communication and publications of programs, events and activities.
